Boating Services
Marina
Members and visitors seeking berths should apply to the Marina Manager, Chris Hawkes, whose office is located above the services kiosk at the beginning of Cross Quay on the northern marina.
The Marina Manager is usually available during the mornings on 546-7768 or can be contacted by leaving a message with Nelson Marine Radio VHF channel 28.
A good number of visitors berths are available on D pier and when these are full, visitors can usually get temporary use of a private berth. Visiting vessels should check-in and clear customs if necessary at the head of D pier.
Berths provide water taps and 230 volt power points with CEE 3 pin plug fittings. There are three service buildings in the proximity of the marinas providing showers, toilets, picnic facilities etc, although not all services are available at each location.

Slipping and Boat Storage
The Club has boat storage and work space on the land opposite the Clubrooms. Phone the Club Manager on 546-8251 for details.
The Calwell slipway has the capability to slip vessels of up to 1800 tonnes, as well as a smaller side-haul facility. Dickson Marine operates a 50 tonne travel lift, and Haven Marine and Boatyard (in the inner marina) can slip up to 30 tonnes. A tidal grid in the inner marina can be booked with the Marina Manager, Chris Hawkes.
Coastguard Now-Casting
A continuous weather forecasting service is provided by NZ Coastguard for the local area on VHF Channel 22 with current wind and sea conditions.
Tasman Bay Sailing
Tasman Bay usually provides pleasant sailing conditions and breezes up to 20 knots. In summer, prevailing conditions give calm mornings with the sun heating the land to provide afternoon sea breezes of around 15 knots that usually blow from early afternoon and ease again towards late afternoon. In winter, normally calm conditions mean little useable wind for sailing.
Newcomers to Nelson should not, however, be fooled by these generalisations and need to be aware that Tasman Bay can quickly become a very different place, particularly in strong northerly winds. The bay is big - nearly 40 miles long - and is subject to swells from the Tasman Sea. Strong winds from offshore or within the bay itself can quickly build up a substantial sea. As the depth of water shallows the height of these seas increases, creating at best uncomfortable - and at worst - dangerous conditions.
At such times, harbour entrances on the eastern side of the bay can become virtually unusable and boats may find themselves stuck inside them for days on end. This is particularly true of Greville Harbour and Port Hardy on D'Urville Island and can also apply to Croiselles.
The Cut, Nelson harbour entrance, also becomes a danger area in times of high seas, particularly with outgoing tides. Skippers are urged to take care when entering or leaving The Cut in these conditions, and a prudent yachtsman will start his motor as a precautionary measure at such times.
Newcomers to sailing in Nelson should also be aware of an area of shallows between the Cut and the lighthouse. Check this on your chart and give them a wide berth - particularly at low tide.
Another hazard exists in The Cut between piles 2 and 3. Approximately two metres inside the line of these piles is a rock which has been struck by many of our keel yachts. Give this a wide berth and do not be tempted to cut in closer than five metres from the line of piles any time between with mid and low tide.
Nelson has a tidal range of up to 4.5 metres which makes it important to be aware of the state of the tide when boating in the area. Your depth sounder may show a depth of 4 metres when you depart yet you can hit bottom in exactly the same place on your return.
Skippers are encouraged to carry a copy of the book "The N.Z. Cruising Guide - Central Area" by Keith Murray and Ralph S Von Kohorn, which provides essential details about anchorages and cruising in the area.
